Beautiful Kings Beach, Tahoe

Wow! What a race weekend! The Ta-Hoe Nalu festival was held in King’s Beach Ca. which is North Lake Tahoe. We were at 6,229 ft elevation on a lake that is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide! In normal situations this would have been a beautiful flat water race where we could have seen rocks underneath us and enjoyed the beautiful clear blue water but that was not the case!

The weather to start the first of the 5 races for the weekend called for blustery winds with gust up to 25mph and they weren’t kidding! The lake turned into the Atlantic Ocean so it was beginning to look a lot like home here in NC. This was the recreational race so it had the largest amount of participants. We all were excited to race but were seriously hoping for better conditions to be in. The wind and large side chop made for a challenging race morning but we all charged through anyway ready to test our endurance.

Our 4–5 mile race had us going parallel to the beach which proved to be very difficult with the wind and side chop. Most racers had to drop down to knee stance to even stay in the race. As we all finished we were happy to have gone out there and do the best we could in those conditions. The air was chilly but the sun was shining and cold tasty beverages were the reward…even at 10am ☺ After the recreational race came the Grom race and the kids got to give it their best and they did! The Elite race followed at 1:30 and it was awesome to watch the big names in the sport do their thing and charge through the finish line! Most of the Elite racers would go on to Sunday to compete in the 10mile race in the same conditions. They did a great job and again happy faces once they were back on the beach!Tahoe Nalu 2010 KimJames blog pix Surftech Trailer

Kim James with the Surftech 14′ BARK Dominator

The weekend was full of fun with the many SUP sponsors hanging out at their tents with up and coming boards and paddles to try, great information about the sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding, great places to eat and cool surf shops to check out along the King’s Beach area.

I really enjoyed my race weekend in Tahoe and was glad to have had the support and help from the guys at Surftech who made sure I had a BARK Competitor there to race. I really enjoyed meeting Gabe, George and Ty from Surftech and trying out the new 14ft Surftech BARK Dominator. I also tried a great all around SUP board (12’6″ Wateryder) from Micky Munoz and another from Robert August (11′ Wingnut). I learned so much from these guys this weekend and was grateful to have the time with them. I am also thankful for the hospitality of my Kialoa Paddle family for the paddle, dinner, and great conversations we had! I’m looking forward to the next time we can all see each other again and to the next race to come! It was an amazing weekend full of challenging SUP Races, great friends, crazy weather and beautiful scenery! Can’t wait to go again next year!

We’re going to Tahoe! “Where to Next?” demo tour continues…

August 19th, 2010

Tahoe Nalu road map

Load up the vans! Surftech is on the road again continuing our country-wide SUP demo tour. We’ll be leaving tomorrow from HQ in Santa Cruz for beautiful Lake Tahoe for the 2010 Quiksilver TA-HOE NALU Paddle Festival at Kings Beach, Tahoe, CA.

Surftech team rider Slater Trout, fresh from his second place finish in the grueling 28-mile paddle around Manhattan in New York, will be showing up to prove once again that he excels in a variety of conditions.

What’s that, you want proof?

Rewind to early August in UtTahoe Nalu Race event flyerah: While others were complaining about the thin air at altitude in which the H20 Overdrive race (read more on Slater’s blog) was to take place, Slater took it in stride and aced the competition, taking home the win. With Utah’s average elevation at approximately 4300ft and the surface of Lake Tahoe sitting at a lofty 6225ft above sea level, this weekend will truly be a test for all competitors. Also joining the race will be team riders Jay Kincaid and Taylor Robertson. Can’t wait to be at the water’s edge!

For those that want to get in the water in a slightly less competitive fashion can find us demoing out an impressive fleet of SUPs, including some new gems.

Gettin’ excited? We are! Do you LIKE it?

Jamie Mitchell Wins 9th straight Molokai-2-Oahu title!

July 27th, 2010

Photo: Bernie Baker

Jamie Mitchell, claimed an unprecedented ninth Molokai-2-Oahu World Paddleboard title in Hawaii on Sunday. Jamie completed the 32-mile endurance challenge in a time of 4 hours, 52 minutes and 45 seconds, just outside of 4 minutes shy of his record of 4:48:23, set in 2007. Mitchell attributed his success  in the event to his vast experience paddling in unruly Hawaiian waters.

With his ninth Molokai-2-Oahu title under his belt, Jamie will now turn his attention to New York City where he’ll participate in the Sea Paddle NYC event on August 13th.

Surftech Summer of SUP Photo Contest…

July 23rd, 2010

get your SUPs and cameras out, ladies and gentlemen

♦ Surftech SUP is holding its first (of many) contests. (Really, this is just an excuse for us to give away some shwag.)

The sun is out and the weather is nice, so we know you are out there on your Surftech SUP boards with your Surftech paddles wearing your Surftech paddle gear.  We want to see you in action!!

How do you qualify to win, you ask?

It’s easy!  Send us your photos and/or videos of you with your Surftech SUP product and you are eligible to win.  Do you paddle in a body of water that will turn a few heads?  Do you paddle with a dog or two on your board that is a site to see?  Are you paddling wearing a superman costume?  Are you paddling in a crosswalk of a busy downtown street?  Get creative and put your Surftech SUP gear to work in front of the lens!

We are looking for the most unique, creative and distinctive photos out there.

If we pick your photo or video, we will put it on our SurftechSUP.com blog and social networking sites for the world to see.  Your photo or video may also be used in upcoming advertisements or catalog.  We are trying to make you famous!!  Oh yeah, and we will send you some fresh, new, Surftech SUP shwag to sport the next time you go paddling.  Stickers, hats, paddles, shirts — none of our gear is off limits.

What are the rules??

  1. If you have a video or photo you’d like to submit — please send them to SUP@SURFTECH.COM.
  2. Surftech employees or family of Surftech employees are not eligible … everyone else is.
  3. Photos and videos submitted are property of Surftech and might be used in future promotions. You must confirm that you have the rights to the content you are submitting!!
  4. When submitting a photo/video, please be sure to include your name, contact information (we need to know where to send your shwag, duh!), description of picture/video (where are you? what are you doing?) age and location
  5. Surftech logos or product must be clearly visible in photo or video for consideration

Other ways win???

If you don’t have a camera or are too shy to get in front of one, don’t worry, you still have a chance for some awesome Surftech shwag. We will be picking friends on our facebook page and members of our facebook group page to win.  Also, followers of our twitter account.

Final stop on the “Where to Next?” demo tour Great Lakes — Holland, Michigan

July 19th, 2010

Holland Michigan was the only stop on the Great Lakes segment of the “Where to Next?” demo tour that we had been to before. Local Surftech dealer, Outpost of Holland was hosting an SUP race on Saturday in conjunction with the tour. We knew there would be a pre-registration dinner at Good Earth on Friday night where Candice Appleby and Endurance Athlete Dean Karnazes would make presentations to the crowd. We knew at 9:00am Saturday morning the 1st Annual Great Lakes SUP Classic would be underway at Holland State Park. The only real question we had was, would Dean be running to Holland from San Francisco or would he save his energy for the race and fly out?

When we arrived at Good Earth Restaurant Friday evening, we met Dean and his family (they flew), Rich, Jim and the crew from Outpost of Holland and the 30 or so pre-registered paddlers eager to hit the water Saturday. Candice showed a short video showcasing her incredible talent and answered many questions about her life. While Karnazes told mind blowing stories of running 82 hours straight and hallucinating about an old minor panning for gold and dinosaurs running along with him in the desert. The guy is a good story teller!

Saturday we let Candice sleep in for the first time all week. The rest of us went down to the beach and set up the race site. The event featured two races, a 3-mile short course where competitors completed three loops around a one-mile course and a 6-mile long course in which competitors would complete six laps around the course. The long course however, featured a short beach run after laps one, three and five. The event was very well planned and well attended. There were competitors from as far away as Abu Dhabi, Hawaii, Northern California and Pennsylvania!

The nice folks from Outpost allowed us to paddle in both of the races along with the registered paddlers. Candice was excited to get in some real training to help prepare for the 32-mile Molokai to Oahu race next weekend. She paddled the short course on the 12’6″ Bark Competitor. She waited until all of the paddlers had hit the water then she took off. After rounding the first buoy she found a racer had broken his wooden paddle so she gave him her Quickblade paddle and finished the 1-mile lap knee paddling without a paddle. She stopped and grabbed a back-up paddle and proceeded to pass the entire field with the exception of the lead paddler by the end of the race.

After a short 30-minute break, the long course would be under way. Dean Karnazes felt he had a good warm-up in the first race and was stoked to get on with the longer race. Dean persuaded Candice to let him paddle the 12’6″ Bark so she chose to paddle a 12′ Stock Surftech/Bark prone paddleboard in the race. With a 10–15 mph wind blowing diagonally across the course and the dreaded beach run every other lap, this was not an easy “flatwater” SUP race! Darian Hildreth of Chicago, IL lead the race from beginning to end. Darian stands at least 6’4″ tall and proved to be a very strong paddler. Candice was in the chase pack along with the Outpost of Holland’s own Rich Mosher, Rob Patton of New Era, Michigan and a few others. After 1 hour, 13 minutes and 43 seconds of all-out paddling and running, Darian crossed the finish-line and stamped his name in the SUP history books as the winner of the inaugural Great Lakes SUP Classic!

After the awards were handed out, we held a two hour demo and allowed racers to try out different boards as well as the 30–40 people who had never tried SUP before. Everyone had a great time trying out boards and talking story about the race and looking forward to next year’s event.

Special thanks to Rich and Lisa Mosher for their extreme hospitality in letting us stay at their beautiful home. Thanks to Jim Misiewicz and everyone at the Outpost of Holland for bringing us to Holland, Michigan and putting on a first class event. Can’t wait until next year!!!

Long Course

Men — Darian Hildreth (Chicago)  1 hour, 13 minutes and 43 seconds beating Rob Patton (New Era, Mich.) by 6:07.

Women — Jen Scully (Abu Dhabi) won the women’s elite race in 1:31:22 with runner-up Kara Holsinger (Fairview, Penn.) finishing 6:39 later.

Short Course

Men — Tony Paul (Spring Lake) won the men’s race in 37:27 with Holland’s Ben Van Enk finishing runner-up in 38:32.

Women — Kate Borg of North Carolina won the women’s three-mile in 42:01 with runner-up Mary Radtke finishing in 46:18.
